Ben and Virginia Ali founded Ben's Chili Bowl on August 22, 1958. It survived both of the major riots in Washington DC, and is one of the oldest African American businesses on U street. They specialize in their half smoke which is a DC delicacy. Many people that come to DC go to Ben's Chili Bowl to visit this historic sight, where you can see pictures of famous people that have visited Ben's Chili Bowl. I had a burger, it was really good, and their fries were very crispy. I did not have their famous dogs, but my dining partners did and described it as "really good". Ben's Chili Bowl has a deep history and love within the U street neighborhood. It has a very family and community feel in the restaurant.
